We've tried to answer some of the questions you might have about what to expect before, during, and after the Windows 10 upgrade. Click the options below to find out more.

Is my computer suitable for the upgrade?

We want to make sure that your experience of Windows 10 is a good one. We’ve identified which PCs on campus are currently suitable to be upgraded, those that require hardware changes and those that need to be replaced. As part of the roll-out we will be in touch with you about any changes we need to make before upgrading.

Will I lose access to any software?

We have been working to ensure that the standard suite of applications used at the University of Suffolk remains available in Windows 10.

If you have any additional specialist software installed on your PC, please record this (including any installation media/licence information). We will provide details about how to submit this information to us soon.

Please note that if you also have specialist hardware peripherals connected to your PC, you may need to check with the supplier about compatibility with Windows 10.

What will happen to my files?

Files and folders stored to your Desktop, in the Documents area (H: drive), and the Shared (N: drive) will still be available when you log in to a Windows 10 PC.

With the integration of Office 365 into Windows 10, we encourage you to use the features of OneDrive to save, organise and edit your files.

You can find out how to access your Documents and the Shared drive, as well as use the OneDrive client, on our Windows 10 Getting Started page by clicking here.

Save your browser bookmarks and Sticky Notes

If you want to make sure you can access your web browser bookmarks in Windows 10, you’ll need to export them before we upgrade your PC to Windows 10. You can find out how to do this by clicking here.

Your Sticky Notes will not be transferred automatically. You'll need to save any Sticky Notes to a Notepad or Word document and recreate them in Windows 10.

Familiarise yourself with Windows 10

If you’re unfamiliar with Windows 10, we’ve created some guides to help you find the things you’re used to. Please click here to access them.

We will also be providing dedicated “try out” PCs if you want to experience Windows 10 before the upgrade. Please contact the Service Desk for more information.

When will my PC be upgraded?

We will contact teams with information about when the upgrade is planned. If we need to make any changes to your PC prior to the upgrade, this will be arranged separately.

We are scheduling the upgrades to limit inconvenience, but if this cannot be avoided other PCs will be made available on campus during the upgrade period.

How long will the upgrade take?

The upgrade to Windows 10 and installation of any additional software can take up to 4 hours, and during that time you will be unable to use the PC.

Where are my documents, bookmarks and network drives?

For information about finding your files, importing your browser bookmarks and making sure you can access any other network shares, please click here.

What if I think some software is missing?

When a PC is upgraded to Windows 10, the standard suite of applications will be installed automatically.

If you are a staff member and think some software is missing from your PC after the upgrade, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Some applications are no longer supported in Windows 10. For more information please contact the Service Desk.

Where can I provide feedback about the upgrade?

We welcome your feedback to help us identify where we can improve the service we provide. Once your PC has been upgraded, we will ask you to complete an online feedback form.

Please use the online form for feedback only. If you have any urgent issues following the upgrade please contact the Service Desk.
