Windows

The University currently has Windows 7 deployed as it's standard Operating System (OS), and is on the vast majority of the PCs available for use on campus. Windows 7 is due to go out of support on January 14, 2020. Due to this we are currently trialling Windows 10 on the Ipswich campus and would like to hear your feedback. You can currently trial Windows 10 in the following areas:

  • Waterfront Building 3rd Floor - Next to the windows overlooking the WAD
  • Library Building 1st Floor - Room L108

Additionally, some staff are already trialling Windows 10 as their full time desktop, which we are using to find issues with software compatibility and any issues that occur on the new OS.

macOS

The Univeristy has a range of Apple Mac devices across the Ipswich campus. Most of these are located in the Arts Building, where the specialist photography and design labs are located. The majority of the Mac Pros are running macOS High Sierra where as the iMacs are running older operating systems from Yosemite upwards. We are currently looking into costs for a Mac replacement scheme but this is in the early stages of the project.

Staff members can make requests for new additional software, this will require sign-off from your line manager. We advise that requests for teaching software are made up to a year in advance of deployment for teaching.

Please raise requests for new software on the service desk portal, Minerva (https://minerva.uos.ac.uk).

Timeframe

Please be aware that software evaluation and deployment can take up to ten weeks. Six weeks for evaluation and up to another four weeks for additional services such as, single sign-on, cloud applications, licensing (e.g. roaming licenses, per computer licenses, enabling software libraries etc).

Please allow for this timeframe when considering the deployment of new software for teaching or business functions.

Budgets

The cost for software licenses may be payable by the department requesting the software. IT services does not have budget to purchase additional services or licenses. It is up to the school or department to submit an executive approved budget. Any annual renewals of software licenses is the responsibility of the department. These will need to be discussed with both IT Services and Finance in advance of the renewal date.
